In combination with a proximal sciatic nerve block for interventions at the lower extremity, distal to the hip, and especially for complex knee joint operations or operations with a tourniquet near the groin. The catheter technique recommends itself particularly for operations with high postoperative analgesia requirements: e.g. plastic surgery of the cruciate ligament, knee joint synovectomy, knee joint endoprostheses.

Impaired coagulation; the same rules apply as for spinal cord techniques. A list of general contraindications is given at the end of the chapter.
